HAPPY NEW! Resolution time

Ok so I went back and found my list of resolutions for 2009 {click here to read}. It was a short, realistic list and I am proud to say that I accomplished 3 of the 4 resolutions. I fell short on learning how to use my accounting software. Instead I decided that I like throwing my money away on things to have others do that I could probably do myself if I just TRIED! lol o'well, at least I can admit my weakness right? See, I wasn't lying when I told my high school math teacher that I was "never going to use this in the real world" HA HA. I showed her right? {wrong, but don't tell her that}

2009 was a great year both professionally and personally. I am an extremely lucky person. I am looking forward to what 2010 has in store. This year I simply resolve to be more focused and determined to make my business dreams a reality.

We went handmade this season for our teacher gifts. A mason jar filled with Hershey Kisses and SCRUMPTIOUS Peanut Butter Blossom Cookies. Wrapped in tissue paper and a custom hang tag that I found HERE.

Instead of wrapping them up in a box with pretty paper I thought I nice eco-friendly, reusable Market Tote found HERE would be smart.

DESTASH SCRAP PACK BUNDLES

I had 3 overflowing baskets CHUCK FULL of scrap fabric that I saved for the days when I would get around to making all sorts of fun little projects with them. Well, there never seems to be enough hours in the day and I haven't gotten around to making much with them. So it's time to let go and give all this fabric a good home.

Each scrap bundle includes over a pound of fabric which averages out to be about 3 yards of fabric in weight - WHOA BABY! They all vary in sizes but some bundles include large pieces such as fat quarters and 1/2 yards. They all have smaller pieces as well, the smallest being

7" x 10". See, very usable scraps here. The bundles include designer fabrics from Michael Miller, Amy Butler, Paula Prass, Erin McMorris, Patty Young, Heather Bailey, Denyse Schmidt & Alexander Henry.

My first Craft Fair is behind me

phew, I am a tired girl. Those puppies are a lot of work! Here are a few pictures to share:

Overall it went ok. Sales weren't great. I think it was because it was at a college and 90% of the customers were students. The experience was great though. I was able to get a feel for how fairs work. I did a lot of people watching and was in awe at all the wonderful booths at the fair. Most of my sales came from other vendors which was really cool. Maybe they were sizing up my work, or maybe they really liked it ha ha.

I got A TON of compliments on my grid wall. My sweetie, Jim, built it for me. I am very lucky to have him in my life - didn't he do an amazing job? It comes apart for easy (but not light) transport. Not only did he build it but he and my brother-in-law Kenny carried that baby up 2 flights of stairs and assembled it for me THEN came back and disassembled it all and carried it back out. I was sweating just watching them lol

I got my vinyl sign from Empressive Designs. Carisa was great to work with and so fast. I like the vinyl signs better than the standard vendor signs you see at most craft shows.

I will be placing many of the items you see above in my ETSY SHOP this week - so stop by and do some holiday shopping with me.

Introducing... the Chelsea Drawstring Bag!

I came up with this design a few years ago and have currently been selling them in my .com shop under the name "Windsor" {all of my bags are named for towns in New England}. Well there was just something too "snobby" with Windsor so I now call her Chelsea.

This is a versatile bag. It comes with 2 strap options as well as 3 slightly different ways to change the look of the bag. Load this baby up with pockets and use it as a diaper bag, knitting bag or an everyday bag.

Right now Chelsea is being tested by some fabulous ladies. Once the pattern is complete I will begin taking pre-orders for the pattern. I came across these cute prints from Sprout Designs Australia over at one of my favorite fabric shops Fabric Worm. They are hand screen printed in Australia and are perfect for apparel and home decorating.

I love the little squirrel in this one:

I HAVE ZIPPERS!

I finally conquered my fears of zippers. It wasn't so bad, I don't know why I fussed for soooooo long. Maybe because it was a standing joke between my friends and I for so long. I was forever being asking "do you offer zippers?" (or as I pronounce them with my Boston accent "zippahs"). My answer was always "soon". Well 3 (or maybe 4) years later ...

YES, I HAVE ZIPPAHS!!!!

Baby steps, people BABY STEPS. For now I am only offering them on these darling pouches which by the way are currently for sale in my ETSY SHOP! What is your MAJOR MALFUNCTION?

Have you have had one of "those" days where NOTHING you do it right? When you can't seem to get you of your own way?

Whelp, I had one of these days recently except I didn't realize I had the day (about 4 days ago) until last night. Ya see, I was packing up a bunch of different things to be shipped out. Orders, giveaway items and gifts. This is where I had my MAJOR MALFUNCTION. I put the wrong shipping labels on 2 of the packages. Yup, the cute little goodies for my friend Meghan's newborn twins (who live in NH) were sent to a giveaway winner all the way in CA. Anne, (giveaway winner) received the baby goodies and was slightly confused.

Could I be any more of a doofus? DON'T ANSWER THAT!

After a good laugh, the packages are now in route to the their rightful owners. Anne, thanks so much for being such a good sport. Meghan, I KNOW you are not shocked by my recent actions. I am glad I was able to make you laugh!

Tutorial Tuesday - Fabric Wall Art

Today's tutorial is brought to you from the blog of Genevieve Gail. If you haven't checked out her blog before, you really should. She has some super ideas!!!

In this tutorial she will show you how to make quick, fabulous fabric wall art on a budget. Score right?

Supplies:
Wooden Stretchers (can be found at your local art supply store)
Fun Fabric
Staple Gun
Scissors
Brown Acrylic Paint (Optional)
Paintbrush (Optional)

Step 1:
Decide what size you would like your artwork to be and purchase wooden stretchers to create that size. I used a combination of 24", 36", 40", and 48" stretchers.

Step 2:
Fit the stretchers together to form an open frame

Step 3:
Lay your fabric face down and lay your stretcher frame on top. Trim around frame so you have just enough of fabric edge to wrap around the frame (probably a few inches all the way around).

Step 4:
Now here is where it gets a little tricky...Pull your fabric up around one side of the frame and place one staple in the middle of the stretcher. The natural thought would be to start at one point and go continuously around the frame from there, but it is actually best to place one staple on all four sides first. Then work your way from the center staples to the outside of the frame with a few staples on each side, alternating sides until you are at the end. Be sure to pull the fabric as tight as you can as you place your staples and this will eliminate any slack in the final product.

Step 5:
When you get to the ends you will need to fold the corners. I wish I had a good trick for this but I don't- I just play with it until I get a good clean looking corner and add a few extra staples to secure it.

Step 6:
If you have a lot of extra fabric hanging over the back of your frame you might want to trim it down. Just be careful not to get too close to the staples as the fabric could eventually tear through.

Step 7:
This step is totally optional, but it's my favorite part! If you would like a more "rustic" edge, or need a way to tie different fabric panels together you can add brown acrylic paint to the edges of the frame. I use a dry brush technique that you can see here.

So that's it, a quick and easy way to spruce up a room!

Ok, after being away for vacation I am blowing the dust of my keyboard and jumping back into "work" mode. I have come up with a few ideas to for daily/weekly features on the blog.

Tuesdays will be dedicated to tutorials. Tutorials that I have either found an another site and simply have to share with you, tutorials that I have come up with myself or maybe you have a spiffy tutorial that you think I should share. Let's get to today's awesome tutorial {shoot, there I go again}. It's for Hip Covers and it comes from one of my favorite crafty blogs Little Birdie Secrets.

Is this a GREAT idea or what? Finally a "cure" to hide your "unmentionables" while wearing those low-rise jeans. Even better to help tuck in that muffin top. Perfect for grown woman and tweens alike. This particular tutorial is for tweens but a little tweaking of the measurements and you can make one for yourself too.

Supplies:

*Stretchy knit fabric.

*Stretchy sequins or lace (optional). The stretch part is really important. Regular lace and sequins will not work. The lace or sequins need to be able to expand over the hips.

*Matching thread and sewing machine

This bag evolved over time. My first draft of the pattern, the bag had a more squared off look to it and I just wasn't 100% loving. But, I sent it off to my invaluable testers anyway. After getting the first few tests back, I knew I had to make a slight design change and came up with what you see pictured above.

I would like to thank Susan, Carol, Patty & Jamie for all their hard work. Your help and support is and was very much appreciated. To the ladies who wanted so much to test this pattern but time and life just got in the way. I appreciate your enthusiasm and willingness to help. Beware, I will be contacting you soon for my next pattern :)

Okay so I sent my 2nd and hopefully final draft off to the testers today. I made some minor changes in instructions and a slight change to the shape of the bag but I think overall it's going to be gaw-gous!

Wanna see the "reject pictures" for the cover? Not bad right?? I was playing with logo size and placement and title fonts. I went with a different picture but I wanted to give you a sneak peek at the bag.

I am a proud member of the CABTeam {Carried Away Bag Maker Team}. Our international team is 203 members strong and growing every day. We opened this team shop so that we could give back to those in need. All proceeds are given to charities voted on by our team members.

Our first team challenge was to create a bag that represented our personal feelings about the word "freedom". We are so excited to be able to show our appreciation for freedom by helping make life on the front lines a little easier for one of our fighting girls! The proceeds from all bags sold in this shop will go to send care packages to deployed military ladies through herobox.org. HeroBox is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides custom support to our heroes overseas. Their mission is to provide items that deployed American soldiers need and want while they are away from home defending our freedom. A HeroBox is a care package that has been customized to a soldiers specific request. The troops have certain needs and wants depending on their sex, location, and a variety of other factors. The typical care package that a soldier receives isn't always influenced by those needs and wants. The goal is to make sure that each HeroBox is directly influenced by the soldier.

Currently there are 8 bags for sale in the shop with more to come. I plan on making my "freedom" inspired bag this weekend. Please stop by and check it out and spread the word.

It's ready for testing

My first pattern that is, Melrose Tote. I am extremely anxious about sending this pattern out of testing. Will they like it? Will they understand it? Are the measurements right? Agh - I was up all night with those thoughts. Good thing I can take constructive criticism, I am fully prepared for it.

All this rain we are having is making it hard to get any sort of good lighting to take pictures of the bag. Fingers crossed that I can check that off the list today. For now I am off to print up the template for my AWESOME testers.

Sorry I've been slacking on the blog lately, it's summer and the sun has finally come out here in MA and we have taken full advantage of it. (as I type this it is currently pouring - boooooo)

Shop Annoucement {part 2}

OK OK OK! After many inquiring emails begging for the details I figured "what the heck". It's my news to tell and I wanna tell it. So gather 'round kiddies, it's story time.

I have been doing a lot of thinking about what the future holds for Venezie Bags. What I love about having my own business, what I don't love. What else I would like to do etc etc.. After speaking with many people, doing tons of research, reading many books, getting helpful advice and lots of encouragement I have decided to take a leap of faith and "expand" Venezie Bags.

So it's with a tremendous amount of excitement, I am pleased to announce my next venture:

Venezie Designs is going to be my line of boutique patterns. That's right, this girl is going to take a stab at publishing patterns. Since I mainly make bags/totes you can probably guess what my debut pattern will be {wink wink}. I am hoping to have the instructions for my first pattern completed in the next week or so. From there it will go into test mode. So if you are a sewer and want to volunteer your time to test a pattern - please email me at info@veneziebags.com. Once the testing is complete, the pattern will go to print and then I will offer them for sale. Exciting right??

So that is what all the hoopla is about. I am extremely excited and nervous but I love a challenge. If starting a new business in this economy, with 2 kids home for summer vacation isn't a challenge I don't know what it - ha ha. For now http://www.veneziebags.com/ will remain temporarily closed so I can focus on this process. I plan to reopen it under my new name and offer my same product line as well as my new patterns. EEK!

Right now my machine, fabrics and notions are just piled up in the kitchen corners and have taken over the kitchen table, counters (they are great for cutting!), floor and living room. A little about Krista and FABRIC CLOSET: I started my store a little over a year ago while I was pregnant with my second child. I have always wanted to be my own boss and run my own store and just sort of stumbled on to the idea of running my own fabric store while looking around on Etsy. My store has slowly been growing over the last year and I hope to grow it even more after we move. We don't know where we will be moving to because my husband is in the military but it will definitely be several states away.

Q & A TIME:

Q: What is your favorite medium to work with?
My fabric medium to work with is definitely fabric. I am surrounded by fabric every day and love to feel and see the amazing prints the designers come up with. I have to say the Internet does not do justice to so many of the fabrics I carry. Pictures just can't show how beautiful they are.

Q: What do you like best about your Craft Space?
My craft space is in need of a major makeover. It is basically only a work space right now for selling fabric. With our upcoming move I have had to put away almost all my sewing supplies (other than my sewing machine) and only keep out the basic necessities for continuing my business.

Q: What tip/s can you share that makes your craft space functional for you?My current craft area works well for what it is intended for, cutting fabric. I have a great set up for cutting and packing fabric, but not doing much else. I sure hope my next home will have a big area for a new wonderful craft room.

A little about Carisa: My crafting career began at an early age when my mother taught me to sew (I made clothing and quilts) and then about 5 years ago it evolved to include paper crafts. I immersed myself in scrap booking, stamping, card making, and paper crafting home decor items.

About two years ago I was introduced to Vinyl as a Home Decor element and was immediately hooked. I began using my design experience as a quilter and scrapbook artist to start designing vinyl wall, tile, auto, and sign decals. My designs are now expanding using design elements that can be used anywhere to embellish your space! I love custom design work- especially creating custom stick families for cars, chore charts, gift buckets, and more!

After leaving my job as a full time high school Family and Consumer Sciences teacher last summer to move to a small college town, I made designing my stay-at-home career. My Etsy shop opened full force in January and proceeds go to helping my husband finish college.

My current craft space is my apartment kitchen table and island! My tip is plan your craft space so it is functional, but essential items are also portable... that has been invaluable to me as I participate in crops and travel to craft shows with my vinyl equipment and supplies. I can grab a whole plastic roller chest of drawers, run tape to keep the doors shut, and then lay it in my trunk and off I can go to a crop!

A: My husband gave me a sewing cabinet for my birthday - it fits the sewing machine, over locker, threads and other goodies and packs up into a neat little bundle when required. The kids love taking everything out of it constantly too...

Very Happy Chair + Giveaway

Here we are at day #6. Today I am pleased to bring you Leona from Very Happy Chair.

Here is what Leona has to say about her shop: I like stuff. I like making stuff, fixing stuff, painting stuff. And I'm always looking to create something new, or give something old a new twist. I can't seem to get enough of beads, paints, and fabric. The first project (besides my art table) was one salvaged and unsuspecting kitchen-type chair which received a couple coats of paint and a huge red dahlia painted on it. Which is why my shop is called "Very Happy Chair". My shop will eventually contain jewelry, textiles, downloadable textile designs, and the occasional piece of furniture or household goods (depending on how easy it would be to ship). Furniture goods are ones I have salvaged and revamped with paint and pattern, to give them new life.

Q & A Time:

Q: What is your favorite medium to work with?
A: Paint, fabric, beads. Mostly paint.

Q: What do you like best about your Craft Space?
A: My work table: it's one I found on Craig's list for $5, and gave it an overhaul with a bold graphic flower print. It's actually part of what helped inspire me to paint more furniture as a creative outlet and a business venture.

Q: What tip/s can you share that makes your craft space functional for you? A: This is probably pretty obvious, but keep your craft space neat. Keep it fresh and fun, so it's always a place you like to retreat to as opposed to a corner where you have to clean and do chores.

Q: What is your favorite medium to work with?
A: My jewelry is very eclectic. I use a wide variety of techniques and materials, such as gemstones, pearls, glass and wood beads, polymer clay, recycled paper, and wire wrapping. It has proved nearly impossible for me to choose a favorite medium, since my work is very much mixed media. But if I had to choose I would have to say gemstones, because of their versatility and wide color range.

Q: What do you like best about your Craft Space?
A: My "craft space" is just a little corner of my living room. It's a great place to work because there's always distractions. Some people would find this irritating, but for me it just makes it more interesting to have all sorts of background: family coming and going, TV on, dinner cooking. I love chaos!

Q: What tip/s can you share that makes your craft space functional for you?
A: You have to find what works for you! I've seen pictures of other people's beautifully organized and neatly arranged craft spaces, and I think, "Wow, I wish mine looked like that." But I know that would never work for me. I need to have all my stuff laid out all helter skelter; that's just how I work best. Find what inspires you and work with it.

A little about Jennifer: I have always enjoyed crafting and have been doing so for many years. My favorite medium to work with is paper. There are so many things you can do with paper. Every week I am adding to an ever growing list a new idea I want to try. It is easy to work with and you can get many different looks and styles using paper that appeal to many different tastes and personalities.

What do you like best about your craft space? Right now my craft space is small but convenient and well-organized. Everything is within reach and is set up to work for me. It is bright and airy and cheery and is right next to my kids playroom so I can work when they are playing. I even have a space for them to create their little works of art which makes it fun when can sit side by side doing what we love to do.

What tips can you share that make your craft space functional? I think organization is key to a functional craft space. Because my space is small I have to be organized. Everything has it's place and is labeled so it is easy to find. I always make sure I put as much as I can away each night so I can stay on top of it. You don't have to spend a lot of money either to stay organized. Simple clear plastic bins you can pick up at the Dollar store are just fine.

You could use this same process on a coffee can or formula can (empty and cleaned of course) to store all sorts of crafting notions such as beads, buttons, writing utensils etc... They would even make a great gift. Fill the completed bucket or can with all sorts of crafting goodies and give them to a friend. I know I would be psyched to receive a gift like that (hint hint).

About Lilybella Boutique: Lilybella was started two years ago by myself and my daughter, making fabric diaper bags and baby items and personally monogramming them. We came across a fabric called oilcloth at a flea market one weekend, and thought this fabric would make such a useful and practical material for the diaper bags because of the "wipe clean with a damp cloth" feature. What I like best about my craft space: We built a new house about four years ago and I was able to design my "own" craft room from scratch, so it has all the features that are a perfect fit for me. I built in lots of shelving for my baskets and materials that are easily reachable at a moments notice. I built a huge closet with lots of shelving as well, so there is endless places to store anything I need for my business and personal crafting. I put in windows all across one wall, and my most favorite thing is looking out onto a beautiful herb and flower garden that I designed and planted right outside my windows. I open my windows everyday and the smell of the flowers and herbs are so heavenly. I have a cute little bird bath in the middle of the garden as well as a bird house. My sewing machine sits directly facing the garden, so I am birdwatching all day long. It is heavenly!

My favorite medium to work with: Obviously, it is the oilcloth. I cannot quit thinking of fun and practical things to do with this fabric. I am inspired by it everyday, and never, ever get tired of sewing with it.

Tips for making your craft space useful: A lot of crafters think that having a big huge space to work in is the ultimate. And, while it is important to have the most space you need for your particular medium, I think it is wise not to have too much space, where things are not easily accessible to you. My space is not too small, but it is not so large that I have to walk all over the place to get what I need. I can easily reach most things I need very quickly, and when you are working on a schedule and want to get a lot done quickly, having everything easily at hand, within reach, saves a tremendous amount of time. So bigger is not always necessarily better when you are talking about efficiency and time management, in my opinion.

It's from Lizzie B Cre8tive! It's too cute. First I think I will make my sweet little 4 yr old a bag for all her goodies that she INSISTS on bringing with her every time we leave the house. I can't wait to get to work on this, but first I still have a few custom orders to complete first.

Lately I have a thing for flower embellishments. On clothing, bags, headbands etc.... So right away this book grabbed my attention:

Fun to Wear Fabric Flowers by Elizabeth Helene Searle. This book is jam packed with inspiration, tips and instructions to make your own fabric flowers. So be on the look out for those or something similar soon.
